Anyone who knows me, knows that I am open and honest about the heartache that suicide has brought to my world. When I was growing up I had a few high school acquaintances who completed suicide. Although it affected me in the moment, making me sad and empathetic to them and their families, I didn't fully understand...I just hacked it down to teenage hormones. Sad really, that in those times, it was never discussed, it was swept under the carpet as a shameful
thing to do. In all reality, it still is hidden!
I decided not to be one of those people who hide my reality! Recently we sponsored the 9th Annual Walk for Suicide Awareness. Together with the help from friends, family and volunteers, we raised $1100.00 for the Distress Centre Durham. More impressively, we raised awareness across the media avenues! Here are some links our awareness raising campaign on t.v., in the newspapers, on the radio and even on the streets (handing out 5000 flyers).
I want to thank all of the volunteers who helped us, all of the individuals who sponsored us, all of the companies who featured us, and all of the emotional supporters who I have had through all of this! I'm very proud of all of us for coming together to raise our voices and SHATTER the stigma surrounding suicide in order to allow prevention to take place!!
Everyone who came out to the walk, together, raised $35,000!!! Amazing! Great job everyone! At the end of the walk the Distress Centre Durham hosted a yummy bbq and we all participated in a very touching balloon release ceremony! We wrote messages to heaven on our balloons and released them for our loved ones.
